Gorge du Verdon, France

16

Gorge du Verdon is a river canyon (25km long) considered as Europe's most beautiful, and I fervently attest to that. Its cliffs drop down to 700m, making it the largest canyon in Europe! We were driving in from Grasse and stopped by Castellane for a map and a tourist booklet. It's truly another universe at the Verdon Natural Regional Park and I only wish we could spend a few days there. We were short on time and only drove around the rim, Circuit des Gorges du Verdon, which covers 134km and takes 3-4 hours. There's a plethora of activities to satisfy the hearts of any nature lover: hiking, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, rafting, fishing... The distinct emerald-turquoise colour of the river and lac de Saint-Croix is due to the fluorine and tiny seaweed that's in it. One of the most beautiful and windy (in both meanings of that word) drive I have ever been on!
