Madrid, Spain

26

Madrid is an artist and art lover's haven. From Goya and Velázquez, to Flemish and Italian artists, to Picasso and Miró... their masterpieces decorate adorn the walls of the many art museums in the city. There is a cultural exhibition going on from May until the end of summer, where you can drop by different cultural centres and buildings to view exhibits (mostly modern art, some photography galleries) for free! My favourite part about these installations, of course, is the thought that these pieces provoke. The interpretations and meanings are fluid, ever changing. One of my favourite excerpts from a book in one of the photography galleries:  Everything has an origin and a meaning: the prescence of the photographer in that particular place, at the particular time when he takes the photograph; the wall scored in a particular way by passers-by walking alongside it, time after time; the slanting light at that hour in the evening that accentuates reliefs; a recent damp patch that still exudes through the pores of the wall; the ubiquity of a drain... every element in the photograph has a history and we could go back as far as infinity...
