Carcassonne, France

24

An impressive fortress perched high on a hill with 53 watch towers and double walled fortifications, the massive ancient walled citadel is France’s second-most frequented tourist spot after the Eiffel tower. Carcassonne’s history dates back to the 6th century BC and was a Roman town. It was fortified during a later imperial period, before becoming a medieval citadel. There is 1000 years of military architecture and 2600 years of history. It’s known to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s The Sleeping Beauty, with drawbridges, towers and charming cobbled streets. With massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its Gothic cathedral, Carcassonne is a remarkable example of a medieval castle. While not as famous, there are a few quaint squares, boutiques, shops and restaurants in the lower town.
