Marseille, France

19

According to legend, Marseille was born from the love affair between the Greek sailor Protis and the Ligurian princess Gyptis. The architecture in Marseille is fascinatingly diverse. Driving in from the East, our first impression of Marseille is that it is a city of practicality. Normal, every day people lived here. En route to the old port, we saw graffitied brick walls and the streets completely filled with cars during the rush hour. It's hard to ignore the MuCEM, the first museum devoted to Mediterranean culture. Its architecture is symbolic of Marseille's historic glory and its modern renewal: the fort Saint-Jean, a 17th century monument is linked by a thin footbridge rising above the sea to the J4, a cubical concrete building dedicated as a cultural centre.
